Cash registers help you track how well your business is doing daily, providing an insight into how much you have taken and the number of customers. Prior to cash registers most shops struggled through with the use of bits of paper and calculators. Owners or staff would have to jot down what had been ordered and for how much for booking keeping later, not easy when you have a queue of impatient customers waiting. Thanks to the use of computers our cash registers are now able to do a multitude of tasks, keeping track of purchases, tax, change required, products codes and more.

What to consider when buying a cash register

- How large is your business?

Cash registers are available with a wide array of functions and abilities. If you have a larger department store, you may have need for department and product codes to be built in to the register. Smaller stores have no need for department codes. Larger businesses will also want to have the use of a product code scanner. Always be sure, before buying a cash register, that it will also support your future needs as well.

Cash registers vary in their abilities and functionality. If you have a very large store you may have need for much more advances features such as promotional codes or multi-buys. A larger store will most likely also want the use of a bar code scanner. However it may be worth considering that features you don’t need right now may become useful later down the line as your business grows.

- What functionality do you require?

As we have said functionality varies between cash registers dependent on what you require. The memory of the machine may become important if you are looking to store large numbers of prices or information such as discounts. Also the reporting format of the machine may be a factor for you. Take the time to think about what you need from your cash register now and what you might need in the future.


- Does your cash register need to be portable?

Cash registers can be heavy and fixed in place or light and portable depending on your needs. If you are likely to travel, perhaps attending trade fairs or events where you will be selling products you will want a lightweight portable machine. If your machine will be in the same place day after day and requires more security you may want a heavier machine that is held in place.
