Why install a cash register?
Cash
registers help you track how well your business is doing daily,
providing an insight into how much you have taken and the number of
customers. Some cash registers simply help calculate prices others
include tax and most include a cash draw that can hold notes, coins and
cheques giving you extra security. Cash registers or point of sale
systems (POS systems) offer a great range of benefits to any shop.
Prior to cash registers most shops struggled through with the use of
bits of paper and calculators. Owners or staff would have to jot down
what had been ordered and for how much for booking keeping later, not
easy when you have a queue of impatient customers waiting. Thanks to
the use of computers our cash registers are now able to do a multitude
of tasks, keeping track of purchases, tax, change required, products
codes and more.
Speed is also an advantage. Cash registers allow you to quickly
check-out customers, allowing a higher flow of customers and cash to
enter through your store. Cash registers with a scanner speed
transactions up even more with the ability to quickly enter a product
into the cash register. Cash registers are an absolute necessity for
any retailer or store owner.
With the use of a cash register you also get added speed. Customers can
be dealt with quickly and efficiently allowing you more time for each
customer. Cash registers with scanners speed up transactions even more.
No store should be without a cash register.
What to consider when buying a cash
register
- How large is your business?
Cash registers are available with a wide array of functions and
abilities. If you have a larger department store, you may have need for
department and product codes to be built in to the register. Smaller
stores have no need for department codes. Larger businesses will also
want to have the use of a product code scanner. Always be sure, before
buying a cash register, that it will also support your future needs as
well.
Cash registers vary in their abilities and functionality. If you have a
very large store you may have need for much more advances features such
as promotional codes or multi-buys. A larger store will most likely
also want the use of a bar code scanner. However it may be worth
considering that features you don’t need right now may become useful
later down the line as your business grows.
- What functionality do you require?
As we have said functionality varies between cash registers dependent
on what you require. The memory of the machine may become important if
you are looking to store large numbers of prices or information such as
discounts. Also the reporting format of the machine may be a factor for
you. Take the time to think about what you need from your cash register
now and what you might need in the future.
- Does your cash register need to be
portable?
Cash
registers can be heavy and fixed in place or light and portable
depending on your needs. If you are likely to travel, perhaps attending
trade fairs or events where you will be selling products you will want
a lightweight portable machine. If your machine will be in the same
place day after day and requires more security you may want a heavier
machine that is held in place.
